Ash Sutton will join Laser Tools Racing for the 2020 season as the team expands to a two-car Infiniti Q50 operation.
The 2017 BTCC champion will spearhead a joint Laser Tools Racing and Team BMR effort after the latter’s Subaru factory deal expired at the end of the 2019 campaign.
Laser Tools Racing re-introduced the Infiniti Q50 midway through the 2019 season as the car replaced the Mercedes-Benz A-Class. Aiden Moffat secured the car’s maiden BTCC podium in the final race at Silverstone.
Sutton, who finished 8th in the 2019 BTCC standings had a frustrating campaign in the Subaru Levorg but finished the season strongly with a 1st and 3rd at Brands Hatch GP. He was pleased to secure his BTCC future.
Sutton said “I’m delighted to be back in the BTCC and back for a fourth successive season. The team I have around me feels like home and I wouldn’t have been able to achieve what I have in this series without them; so carrying that over and signing a new deal with them was a no-brainer. Partnering with Laser Tools Racing and Aiden to drive the Infiniti Q50 in 2020 is hugely exciting and the result of a lot of hard work. We’ve all got the same goal and that is to win”
Sutton sampled the Q50 in a test session at Snetterton late in the season and expressed his excitement at the prospect of racing with Laser Tools Racing in 2020.
He said “I sampled the Infiniti at Snetterton earlier this year and was impressed. All of the ingredients are there and that was apparent when you look at Aiden’s run of results towards the end of the season. With the work going on behind the scenes and the pre-season testing programme that we are planning, I’m confident that we will be able to hit the ground running come the start of the year and be in the mix for some top results. I’ve got that exciting feeling that I had at the beginning of 2017”
Sutton also revealed his enthusiasm in teaming up with his friend, Aiden Moffat for 2020.
“Me and Aiden have had a respectful rivalry on the track, there has been a few occasions where we have got our elbows out but it has always resulted in things staying clean. After visiting Laser HQ with Aiden and seeing the car during the build it’s left us both buzzing for what’s ahead.”
Sutton will contest his first race in the Q50 in the 2020 BTCC season opener at Donington Park.
