Team HARD driver Michael Crees made the most of Sunday’s changeable conditions at Silverstone to secure a career-best 9th place finish.
Crees qualified his Volkswagen CC 24th on the grid for race one in Saturday’s qualifying session, less than half a second off Jason Plato’s pole position time on the Silverstone National Circuit.
Damp conditions for Sunday’s opening race saw Crees take the gamble and switch from slicks to wet tyres before the race as light rain fell before the start, and despite being the only driver on the grid to do so. However the rain subsided, and the Team HARD driver was forced to return to put lane for slicks before the race began and rejoin at the back of the grid. His race cut short after an alternator failed, resulting in a DNF.
In a rain-hit race two, Crees made his way through from the back of the grid to 19th by the time the red flag fell in a race of attrition. Race three would prove to be Crees’ best of the weekend as the correct call to pit on lap four of the race in worsening conditions. He would carve his way through the field to finish the race in 9th, and secure his best-ever finish in the BTCC.
Post-Silverstone, Crees said “What a weekend! Race three was one of the most amazing races I’ve ever been involved in and to come home ninth honestly feels like a win – it has been a weekend to remember for the team as a whole.
“We had great pace as soon as we hit the track and we have just worked on making improvements every time I’ve been behind the wheel. I was a little gutted that the red flag came out in race two because I was making great progress, but that set us up for race three.
“As soon as the rain started to fall I was straight in the pits and suddenly I was around the likes of Plato, Jordan and Turkington. I just stuck with them and went with them and we brought it home ninth, which is unbelievable.”
Michael Crees will return to the wheel of the Team HARD Volkswagen CC for the final round of the season at Brands Hatch on the 12th/13th October.
