Motorbase Performance driver Nicolas Hamilton won’t contest the last six races of the 2019 BTCC season.
Hamilton joined Motorbase ahead of the 2019 season to take part in his first full BTCC campaign with backing from ROKIT, who also back the Williams Formula One team. Before Knockhill, it became apparent that Hamilton’s plans for the remainder of 2019 were in jeopardy due to sponsorship issues, however, an extra injection of capital from ROKIT was thought to have secured his presence for the rest of the season.
The surprising announcement comes ahead of the BTCC’s visit to Silverstone for the penultimate round of the season. Hamilton, who’s best finish of 18th in race three at Snetterton sat 31st in the BTCC standings.
Hamilton said, “Having competed in all eight of the BTCC race events so far this year, I have decided to step back from the final two rounds of the season, to regroup and come back stronger next year. See you in 2020, where I will be hungrier and stronger than ever.”
David Bartrum, Team Principal of Motorbase Performance told their official website
“It’s an unfortunate end to what has been a very positive season for Nic. We’ve been on a truly unique journey together this year, and I’m sad that we won’t have the opportunity to complete it. It has taken a huge amount of effort, hard work, and determination from Nic to reach the BTCC grid. I think he’s shown that he’s a very capable driver, and surprised people along the way. Everyone at Motorbase Performance wishes him the very best with his journey and future motor racing career.”
Motorbase Performance, who also run Tom Chilton and Ollie Jackson in a pair of Shredded Wheat backed Ford Focuses are yet to comment on whether they will run Hamilton’s car at Silverstone and Brands Hatch.
