The Infiniti Q50 will return to the BTCC grid for the first time since 2015 with Laser Tools Racing. The BTCC outfit will switch to the Q50 after campaigning with the Mercedes-Benz A-Class for the last four seasons with the car due to return at the next round at Snetterton.
Present in the BTCC for just one previous season in 2015, a pair of Infiniti Q50s were run by Derek Palmer’s Support Our Paras Racing, who started the season with factory backing from Infiniti. The brand dropped factory support early on in 2015 and the team scaled back to running one car for the rest of the season before dropping out of the series ahead of 2016.
After purchasing the pair of Q50s earlier this year, Laser Tools Racing had originally intended to run the car in 2020 before bringing its introduction forward following a tough start to 2019 with the A-Class which the team felt had reached the end of its development cycle. The Q50 has been undergoing a significant upgrade and now features control RML parts alongside a Swindon engine.
Hopes will be high for Laser Tools Racing and the Infiniti Q50 in the hands of race-winning Aiden Moffat will be a fascinating addition to the grid. The car will appear on track again for the first time at next week’s Dunlop tyre test at Snetterton before returning to competition at the same circuit on the weekend of 3rd/4th August.
