Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell will start Sunday’s Sandown 500 from pole position after the Triple Eight team won both qualifying races on Saturday. Whincup withstood hard pressure from both Winterbottom and Mostert to cross the line 0.8 seconds in front of Frosty.
In one of the most prestigious races of the season, Whincup and Dumbrell have themselves the best possible chance of securing their Sandown hat-trick and the first Holden pole position since Darwin. Speaking after the race, Whincup said “It was a tough battle, we don’t have the quickest car out there but we maximised it. My first pole for a long time, I’m pretty happy.”
The sister Triple Eight Holden of Craig Lowndes will start from the penultimate row of the grid, after incurring a penalty after contact with Jack Perkins during the race, damaging his hopes of a record equaling 5th Sandown 500 victory.
The 2015 Wilson Security Sandown 500 kicks off at 13:25 local time and we’ll be back with more analysis and reports after the race.
